“Efficiency means effectiveness”

Being effective is choosing the right goals from a set of alternatives and reaching them. Efficiency, on the other hand, assumes the goals as given and proper and proceeds to mind the best sources of achieving them. Efficiency is doing the right job. Both are valuable concept but in my mind, effectiveness is more important. The point I wish to make here is that effectiveness must precede efficiency. How can you find the best way to achieve a goal if you don’t know what the goal is.

“Burn the midnight oil”

Most new employees are blinded by this belief to catch their boss’s attention and get promoted. Career workaholics are also common victims of this myth. Seen at the office at nights and weekends, they allocate every possible time on the job. Sleep, family and diversions are all placed in a distant second category of importance

The danger here is we tend to get dull after epanding a good amount of time on a task. Remember that we need to recharge our batteries. Failure to do this hampers our enthusiasm and creativity. In the long run, we might as well acquire the long-hour habit, such as “There’s always tonight or weekend.”

“The best way to get the job done is to do it yourself”

The term 'best' here is actually personal satisfaction. There are times when doing it yourself is the answer. But not at all times. First, you must acknowledge your limitations. Somebody must be far better at doing particular thing. Learn to trust other people’s capability and delegate according to their role.

“Work is not fun”

In the Old Testament, work is regarded as a punishment for sins, and man is to spend most of his waking hours at labor in order to survive.

Depending on the individual and the work, work can be most enjoyable, highly unpleasant in between. Do not run a high risk of shortchanging yourself of some of life’s greatest satisfactions.

“Justice for all”

We all cry for justice. But the fact remains that the world is not fair. The possibilities for injustices are infinite.
